The Saturday Six-169

15 07 2007

One of the most enjoyable parts of belonging to a vital Blogging community is the interaction between the bloggers of that community. Yes, we do sometimes spend the vast majority of our time discussing, or writing about those things that we feel matter most.

But, sometimes, we who spend the days crafting words need a break.  Not from the writing, but from the intensity of the writing. Besides, the writing life is isolated enough as it is. So, when I was introduced to “The Saturday Six“, a meme created by my friend Patrick on his ole AOL Journal, I experienced one of those amazing things about the community of bloggers: we can have fun!  I know, it’s a relatively new concept. Let it bless your hearts. I’ll wait.

It was Patrick who, when I first began blogging, gave me some very important lessons in the craft. One of these lessons was not to be profound, but to be understood. Another was to be accurate, in the truest sense of Journalistic excellence. It was not that I did not know this, but Patrick has been, and remains, an excellent mentor, and an example of what a good Journalist does when the craft is done best. Another lesson Patrick has taught me is to have fun in the process of the craft. He is a superb writer, who remains close, personable, and friendly.

With this new address, I am pleased to again play this entertaining game.

For episode 169, the following questions are answered:

1. What is your absolute favorite dessert?

My favorite dessert is Pumpkin Pie, with French Vanilla ice cream. I like my pie hot (steaming), with Whipping Cream schmoozed all over it. I like my ice cream frozen if possible. It’s a gastronomic delight. No, really!

2. When is the last time you had it?

I enjoyed this delicacy two weeks ago, at home.

3. If you had to give up one of the following for life: cookies, cake, ice cream, pie, or chocolate, which would you choose never to try again?

This is an impossible choice. I would have to shoot myself. Who would demand such a sacrifice?

4. Take the quiz: What flavor of ice cream are you?

You Are Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

You are kind, popular, and generous.
You tend to be successful at anything you try.
A social butterfly, you are great at entertaining a crowd. You are most compatible with strawberry ice cream.

What Flavor Ice Cream Are You?

5. If you attempted to make the dessert you like best, how well do you think it would turn out?

I have made both Pumpkin Pie (the hard way!) and French Vanilla Ice Cream (Ow! Sore arms) many times. It’s cheaper, faster, easier, and quicker to find them in the grocery store. I’m a smart eater!

6. If you were going to invent your own flavor of ice cream to be carried by a company like Ben & Jerry’s, what ingredients would you require?

Coca-Cola, and Rum! (Lots of Rum!) Forget the Lime, please!

Well, sometimes the important questions just must be asked! Why should I lie?

One of the great things about this little game is the opportunity to visit new blogs, and meet new bloggers.  I hope you will check out The Saturday Six, and meet some exceptional writers who, every once in a while, just want to have fun! (Cue the song!)

And so it goes.

I am a writer!

10 07 2007

I write things these days; lots of things. I write short stories, and essays. I write some (but not much) poetry. Much of my writing these days revolves around the responsibilities of administering a writing school.  Policies, procedures, and rules take up a lot of my time. I also write sermons that will, most likely, never be preached from a pulpit. I have many blogs, and keep working on only a couple of them regularly. I’m hoping to aggregate the others here, but I may not. I do have a “home” professional writing site, where my current work is showcased on a regular basis. Feel free to visit, and look around.

I used to write music, but I haven’t in a long time. I have written several non-fiction textbooks, and have spent my time doing my part to pass on the little bit of knowledge that I have gained in this lifetime. Beginning in 2004, I got wind of a group of insane folks who made it their business to write a novel in 30 days. National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) became a haven for me. It has allowed me to stretch my writing wings in a genre that I had never written before. This fall, the first of those projects will be published.

Realizing that makes me feel pretty good. Though many things in life have not turned out the way I would have planned, or even hoped, this is a reality that makes the last three years seem at least a little more worth it. There could be more novels to come. I currently have four in various stages of completion, in amongst the other writing that seems to consume my time these days. It sure would be great to be able to make a full-time living from writing. That first contract is the most elusive (well, except for the next one!) to a new writer. The game has, in the past ten years, completely changed the rules.  New players are taking up the slack where the “Big Five” leave off, and many more writers are finding their work on the shelves of the bookseller.

And, right about the time I’m starting to feel good about the progress being made, I sauntered (yea, verily) over to my friend Patrick’s Place, and saw this.  Mortality returns, my feet hit the pavement, and things are real again.

And so it goes.

Hello World!

9 07 2007

Welcome to WordPress.com. Is this yet another Blog, Bud?

Yes.  And, umm, no. There is a Blog here. I hope it will aggregate several other Blogs, a few of which I actually pay attention to. Therein lies the rub, you see. I have one Blog that I attend to faithfully, and several others that languish in the backwaters of forgotten commitments. My friends tell me I need a “writing” Blog (got one). My friends tell me I need a Blog to write about my journey with cancer. (Got one.) I have Yahoo friends (and a 360 Blog), and MicroSoft friends (and a MicroSoft Space, with Blog), and AOL friends (with a Journal). I have a Blog on Lycos (for no apparent reason), MySpace (which almost came down till some friends found it), and Xanga (which I haven’t visited in years!).  I have a Blog about my Prayer Journey (along with others, at Blogspot).

Are you seeing the dilemma here?  It was such a grand idea, back in the day. I have political Blogs, Blogs on faith and religion, Essay Blogs (even one on blogging!), and Forum Blogs. I need a place to aggregate the results, and organize the work. I don’t want to send anyone, anywhere!  Isn’t there one place where I can Blog daily, regardless of the topic?

I believe this is such a place. I will use categories, and build Chateau de Budroe into the “residential” structure that will accomodate my needs, and my purpose. This is that place. I am a professional, published author who writes across several genres. I have a couple of professional writing sites, and a home webpage which supports my writing endeavors. I write a lot!

I hope you will join me here, and see what is important enough in my world to write about. After all, that is how we develop the conscience, isn’t it?

Hello, world!  Welcome, and welcome home!
